Prophet’s Salah
“Pray as you have seen me praying” these words change my whole perspective of praying salah. A few years ago, It was my belief that if a person is praying salah it is enough, there is no need for discussion about things like tying hands-on chest or belly and doing Rafal Yaadein or not, etc. But then I went through a few Ahadits that completely changed my point of view on this point.
Hazrat Malik bin Horaisؓ narrated that:
We came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and stayed with him for twenty days and nights. We were all young and of about the same age. The Prophet (ﷺ) was very kind and merciful. When he realized our longing for our families, he asked about our homes and the people there and we told him. Then he asked us to go back to our families, stay with them, teach them (the religion), and order them to do good things. He also mentioned some other things which I have (remembered) or forgotten. The Prophet (ﷺ) then added, “Pray as you have seen me praying and when it is the time for the prayer one of you should pronounce the Adhan and the oldest of you should lead the prayer.[Sahih Al-Bukhari 631].
Here I want to clarify a very important point through this Hadith: there is no difference between men’s and women’s Salah. It is not defined from any Qur’anic Ayah and Sahih Hadith that there is a difference in Men and women prayer. Rasool Allah(ﷺ) command all Believers to Pray Salah on his method. And here is another one
Narrated by Zaid bin Wahb
Hudhaifa saw a person who was not performing the bowing and prostration perfectly(not according to Prophet’s teaching). He said to him, “You have not prayed, and if you should die you would die on a religion other than that of Muhammad.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari 791].
And this Hadith led me to do detailed research on the Sunnat Salah through Sahih Ahadith and now I am sharing it with all of you. May Allah lead all of us to the Right Path. Ameen Now I will discuss Qayam, Ruku, Sujood one by one Insha’Allah. All the Ahadith I have used in this Article are Sahih Ahadith.
Sunnah Qayam
Rafa-ul-Yadain(Raising Hands with Takbir)
“Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to raise both his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the prayer. We find a number of Aahadiths on Rafa al Yaadein from different books of Ahadith. I will qoute two of them here Insha’Allah and share others in Ruku Section Insha’Allah.
Sahih Bukhari 735; Sahih Muslim 861; Jamia tarmizi 255 and 256, Sunan ibn e daud 722, Sunan nisai 879, sunan ibn e maja 858
Narrated by Salim bin Abdullahؓ “My father said, “Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to raise both his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the prayer, and on saying the Takbir for bowing. And on raising his head from bowing he used to do the same and then say “Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka l-hamd.” And he did not do that (i.e. raising his hands) in prostrations.” [Sahih Bukhari 735; Sahih Muslim 861; Jamia tarmizi 255 and 256, Sunan ibn e daud 722, Sunan nisai 879, sunan ibn e maja 858].

When he would rise from the two prostrations, he would likewise raise his hands and say the Takbir[Sunan ibn e Daud 864,Jamia Tirmizi 3423]
Tying Hands
Now it comes to tying hands, Rasool Allah( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) place right hand on the left forearm and when we place our right hand on left forearm, it will automatically be on middle of chest. Below is the Ahadith for references.
Sahih Al-Bukhari 740
Narrated by Sahl bin Saadؓ “The people were ordered to place the right hand on the left forearm( the part of a person’s arm extending from the elbow to the wrist or the fingertips) in the prayer. Abu Hazim said, “I knew that the order was from the Prophet (ﷺ) .”[Sahih Al-Bukhari 740]
Sahih Muslim 896
Narrated by Wa’il bin Hujr “He saw the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) raising his hands at the time of beginning the prayer and reciting Takbir, and according to Hammam (the narrator), the hands were lifted opposite to ears. He (the Holy Prophet) then wrapped his hands in his cloth and placed his right hand over his left hand. And when he was about to bow down, he brought out his hands from the cloth, and then lifted them, and then recited Takbir and bowed down, and when (he came back to the erect position) he recited: Allah listened to him who praised Him. And when he prostrated, he prostrated between his two palms.[Sahih Muslim 896].

The Prophet said, Wa alaika-s-Salam (returned his greeting). Go back and pray again as you have not prayed (properly). The man said at the second or third time, O Allah’s Apostle! Kindly teach me how to pray . The Prophet said, When you stand for prayer, perform ablution properly and then face the Qibla and say Takbir (Allahu-Akbar), and then recite what you know from the Qur’an, and then bow with calmness till you feel at ease then rise from bowing, till you stand straight, and then prostrate calmly (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease and then prostrate with calmness (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease in the sitting position, and do likewise in whole of your prayer.[Sahih bukhari 6251].

Narrated by Abu Humaid al-Saeedi Abu Humaid al-Saeedi once told a company of ten of the companions of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ; Abu Qatadah was one of them: I am one among you who is more informed of the way the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم prayed. They said: Why, By Allah, you did not follow him more than us, nor did you remain in his company longer than us? He said: Yes. They said: Then describe (how the Prophet prayed). He said: When the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم stood up to pray, he raised his hands so as to bring them opposite his shoulders, and uttered the takbir (Allah is the most great), until every bone rested in its place properly: then he recited (some verses from the Quran); then he uttered the takbir (Allah is most great), raising his hands so as to bring them opposite his shoulders; then he bowed; placing the palms of his hands on his knees and keeping himself straight, neither raising nor lowering his head; then raised his head saying: سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ“Allah listens to him who praise Him”; then raised his hands so as to bring them exactly opposite to his shoulders; then uttered: “Allah is most great”; then lowered himself to the ground (in prostration), keeping his arms away from his sides; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it, and opened the toes when he prostrated: then he uttered: “Allah is most great”; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it so that every bone returned to its place properly; then he did the same in the second (rak’ah). At the end of the two Rak’ahs he stood up and uttered the Takbir (Allah is most great), raising his hands so as to bring them opposite to his shoulders; then he bowed, placing the palms of his hands on his knees and keeping himself straight, neither raising or lowering his head: then raised his head saying: “Allah listens to him who praises Him”; then raised his hands so as to bring them exactly opposite his shoulders; then uttered: “Allah is most great”; then lowered himself to the ground (in prostration), keeping his arms away from his sides; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it, and opened the toes when he prostrated himself; then he prostrated; then uttered: “Allah is most great”; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it so that every bone returned to its place properly; then he did the same in the second (rak’ah). At the end of two rak’ahs he stood up and uttered the Takbir (Allah is most great), raising his hands so as to bring them opposite to his shoulders in the way he had uttered the Takbir (Allah is most great) at the beginning of the prayer; then he did that in the remainder of his prayer; and after prostration which if followed by the taslim (salutation) he out his left foot and sat on his left hip.
